Every week, 78 percent of people across the country watch online videos with 55 percent tuning in on a daily basis, HubSpot data shows. Video content is slated to represent 85 percent of all U.S. consumer internet traffic by 2020, so it’s important to pay attention to this dominant form of content, especially within social media platforms.
With videos exploding on social media, it’s no surprise that people are more likely to engage with this type of content. Facebook videos receive 135 percent more organic reach on average than a photo, and tweets with videos are six times more likely to be retweeted than those with a photo. Though late to the game, LinkedIn now supports video sharing and 75 percent of those who shared video on the platform found it to be an effective strategy.

Diving in to video may be a little intimidating, but these five tips will help get you started.
- Keep videos short and to the point — target 30 seconds. And try to grab people’s attention within the first five seconds.
- Tell a story. Use persuasive and relatable language that inspires audiences to take action.
- Skip the YouTube or Vimeo link, and upload videos directly to the social media platform. Platforms favor content that’s been posted natively.
- If you don’t feel comfortable shooting or editing video, go live. Both Twitter and Facebook have live streaming capabilities, and you don’t have to be a professional videographer to use them. (Give your audience advance notice so they know to tune in.)
- Since videos can auto-play on silent for people who are viewing in public places — 85 percent of Facebook videos are watched with the sound off — include text overlays, or even full closed captioning. (Hint: Facebook has a free tool that will do this for you, but be sure to review the copy as typos are likely to occur.)
By incorporating video to your social media and marketing strategies, you can expect to see increased exposure, engagement and conversions.
