Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) are essential in today’s workplace as organizations seek to create an inclusive culture that is built upon diverse recruiting practices and provides every employee the opportunity to be seen, heard, included, promoted, and valued.

DEI is about respecting and honoring differences, making sure practices and procedures are equitable, and that employees feel a sense of belonging — not only within their teams but across the larger organization as well. Despite a more intense focus on DEI over the past two years, there’s still much work to be done.

Today, organizations need DEI plans that produce meaningful action and sustainable change. Doing this well means building a clearly-articulated set of DEI values and goals, then gaining acceptance and adherence throughout the organization — from the C-suite to entry-level employees.

Bill Bradshaw leads the firm’s I&D initiatives and oversees its strategy and objectives, including attracting and advancing diverse leaders, foresting an inclusive, accessible, and authentic workplace, and collaborating with leadership to provide broad perspectives and innovative client solutions. He was named to the 2019 NJ Out Power List for his work leading LGBTQ workplace inclusion.

Cecilia Nelson • Director, People Development & Belonging, NRG Energy

Cecilia Nelson heads the newly formed People Development & Belonging team at NRG. Previously, she led the employee relations, North America, function at Direct Energy, where she and her team utilized data to identify and fill organizational gaps that resulted in policy development, cultural change and undertook inspections of key diversity, equity, and inclusion practices. Cecilia’s held progressive roles in human resources, compliance and legal organizations.

Sheila has a diverse 30+-year career spanning corporate, agency, and consultant work focused on internal and external comms, strategic planning, leadership communications training and coaching, and diversity consulting across various industries. At Taft, she leads the DEI communications sector and Taft ClearPoint®, a leadership communications practice that helps to strengthen communications skills of individuals and teams. Prior to Taft, Sheila was vice president of consulting at DiversityInc and vice president of corporate communications for Jackson Hewitt.
